Mohamed Teslim Thomas, a distinguished Islamic scholar from Fourah Bay Community community, and Prince Walian has been appointed as the National Mufti of Sierra Leone, marking a major milestone in the country’s religious and intellectual history. His appointment places him at the apex of Islamic jurisprudence and religious guidance, making him the highest authority on Islamic legal affairs, religious consultations, and Islamic legislation for over 68,000 Imams under the United Council of Imams of Sierra Leone.
Mufti Mohamed Teslim Thomas is a product of deep scholarship and disciplined religious training. He studied at the International University of Africa in Khartoum, Sudan, one of the continent’s most respected institutions for advanced Islamic studies. His academic journey exposed him to diverse schools of Islamic jurisprudence, comparative fiqh, and contemporary Islamic legal thought, equipping him with the intellectual depth and balance required for national religious leadership.
Beyond his new role as National Mufti, Sheikh Mohamed Teslim Thomas also serves as the Deputy Chief Imam of Jamiatul Haq, In Fourah Bay Community. In this capacity, he has earned wide respect for his clarity in interpretation, humility in leadership, and firm commitment to peace, unity, and moral uprightness within the Muslim Ummah and the wider society.
Known for his calm disposition and intellectual rigor, the new Mufti has consistently emphasized Islam as a religion of justice, compassion, and social responsibility. His sermons and scholarly engagements often focus on strengthening faith, promoting interreligious harmony, and guiding Muslims to live ethically in a modern, pluralistic society. Clerics and scholars across the country describe him as a bridge-builder—one who combines classical Islamic knowledge with an understanding of contemporary realities.
His appointment is widely seen as a recognition of merit, scholarship, and service rather than politics or ethnicity. Many Imams and Islamic leaders believe his leadership will bring coherence, credibility, and renewed confidence to Islamic legal institutions in Sierra Leone, particularly at a time when religious guidance is needed on complex social, legal, and moral issues.
As National Mufti, Mohamed Teslim Thomas is expected to provide authoritative Islamic opinions (fatwas), guide religious institutions, advise on Islamic legal matters, and serve as a moral compass for both religious leaders and the general public. His elevation is not only a personal achievement but also a source of pride for Prince Williams community and Sierra Leone at large, signaling a new chapter of informed, principled, and unifying Islamic leadership in the country.
