On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, joined fellow First Partners from around the world for the opening of the Global First Partners Academy, a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening leadership, fostering collaboration, and advancing global efforts to address some of the world’s most pressing social challenges. The gathering brought together influential spouses of Heads of State and Government, alongside development partners and global stakeholders, to explore how leadership rooted in empathy, collaboration, and service can drive meaningful and lasting change.
Speaking during the opening of the Academy, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio reflected on the significance of the platform, describing it as an important reminder that leadership extends far beyond formal authority. According to her, the true measure of leadership lies in the ability to influence lives positively, demonstrate compassion, and inspire collective action toward shared goals.
As President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development, the First Lady emphasized that the role entrusted to her carries both responsibility and opportunity. She noted that her participation at the Academy represented not only Sierra Leone but also the collective aspirations of African First Ladies who continue to champion transformative initiatives across the continent. She stressed that standing together as leaders allows them to share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen their capacity to deliver impactful interventions in health, education, women’s empowerment, and child welfare.
Dr. Fatima Maada Bio underscored that the presence of African First Ladies at the Academy reaffirmed their commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and collaborative leadership. She stated that by investing in knowledge and strengthening partnerships, First Partners are better equipped to respond to emerging global challenges while remaining focused on improving the lives of vulnerable populations.
Central to the opening discussions was the concept of “soft leadership” or “soft power” an approach that prioritizes influence, dialogue, empathy, and consensus-building over authority and coercion. The First Lady observed that the conversations reinforced an important truth: that the voices, advocacy, empathy, and convening power of First Partners remain among the most effective tools available to them.
She explained that when these qualities are exercised with integrity, purpose, and consistency, they become powerful instruments capable of influencing public policy, reshaping societal attitudes, mobilizing strategic partnerships, and expanding opportunities for women, children, and marginalized communities. According to her, soft leadership has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to bridge divides, inspire trust, and generate solutions that improve people’s lives across nations.
Drawing from her own experience as a passionate advocate for women’s rights, girls’ education, maternal health, and gender equality, the First Lady noted that meaningful progress is achieved when leaders combine compassion with action. She said that advocacy backed by commitment can help transform institutions, strengthen communities, and promote inclusive development.
The Academy also serves as a unique platform for building stronger international networks among First Partners, enabling them to exchange ideas, share successful initiatives, and collaborate on strategies that address common challenges affecting societies worldwide. Participants are expected to engage in a series of leadership discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and partnership-building activities designed to enhance their collective impact.
Dr. Fatima Maada Bio expressed heartfelt appreciation to the organizers of the Global First Partners Academy for creating a platform that promotes visionary leadership and meaningful collaboration. She also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of development partners, institutions, and stakeholders whose dedication and support made the initiative possible.
She commended the organizers for fostering a global community of leaders committed to using influence not for personal privilege but to advance social progress, justice, and sustainable development. According to her, such initiatives strengthen international cooperation while empowering leaders to champion policies and programmes that deliver tangible benefits to their citizens.
Looking ahead, the First Lady expressed optimism about the opportunities the Academy presents for learning, partnership, and innovation. She said she looks forward to engaging with fellow First Partners, exchanging ideas, and translating the lessons acquired into practical initiatives that will positively impact communities across Africa and beyond.
She further noted that the opening session marked only the beginning of what promises to be an enriching journey of collaboration and shared purpose. By working together across borders and cultures, she believes First Partners can amplify their collective voices and accelerate efforts to build societies where every individual, particularly women and children, has the opportunity to thrive.
As the Global First Partners Academy gets underway, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to advancing inclusive leadership and strengthening partnerships that promote equality, dignity, and sustainable development. She concluded that through compassion, shared responsibility, and purposeful influence, global leaders can continue building a more just, inclusive, and equitable world for present and future generations.
