Former National Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has firmly rejected allegations circulating on social media that funds disappeared from the party’s accounts during his tenure. In a detailed statement issued on 8 December, Koroma described the claims as “false and misleading,” insisting that all financial transactions under his leadership were carried out transparently and in line with official procedures.
The accusations stem from a viral video featuring First Lady Fatima Bio, who alleged that about Le 1 billion (approximately US$45,000) was unaccounted for after the 2024 Bintumani Conference fundraising event. The conference had brought together senior party officials and donors to mobilize resources for the SLPP’s activities and future campaigns.
Koroma categorically denied that any money went missing. He stressed that every donation and expenditure during his eight years in office was properly recorded, authorized, and backed by documentation. As an example, he cited the one million new leones raised at the Bintumani event, which he said was fully deposited into the party’s account.
“I fully welcome an audit by the new executive of the SLPP,” Koroma said. “I am confident that such a review will show the integrity and transparency with which I managed the party’s finances.”
He described the circulating allegations as part of a “smear campaign” and cautioned SLPP members against drawing conclusions from unverified social media content. Koroma urged party supporters to remain disciplined, measured, and united, especially as internal disputes risk undermining the SLPP’s cohesion.
Addressing the membership directly, he stated:
“No funds went missing. All expenses made under our leadership followed proper procedures and were supported by legitimate documentation.”
Koroma, widely regarded as a grassroots mobilizer within the SLPP, warned that baseless accusations could create damaging divisions:
“Such actions not only create divisions within our party but also portray us differently. This threatens the unity of our great party.”
He called for renewed focus ahead of the 2028 elections, stressing that internal discipline and responsible communication are vital to protecting the legacy of President Julius Maada Bio.
“We must communicate in a constructive and truthful manner. I urge everyone to concentrate on the task of winning the 2028 elections,” he said.
Koroma reaffirmed his commitment to serving the party whenever needed, expressing pride in his achievements as Secretary-General. He also extended holiday greetings to SLPP members and their families as they look ahead to 2026.
As the SLPP navigates these internal tensions, the demand for a full audit and greater transparency is expected to remain central to the party’s efforts to maintain unity and public trust. Whether the financial controversy will be resolved or continue to shape internal politics remains to be seen.
