His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, and the First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, have once again demonstrated their continued solidarity with Muslim communities across the country through their annual Ramadan food distribution initiative.
This year’s gesture, coordinated through JMB and Associates, reached the Bombali Fullah Mosque in Bombali District as part of a broader nationwide outreach during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The donation underscores the President and First Lady’s longstanding commitment to promoting unity, compassion, and social responsibility during one of the most sacred periods in the Islamic calendar.
Ramadan is a month marked by fasting, prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. For many families, particularly in vulnerable communities, the period can also bring financial strain due to increased food demands for Iftar (breaking of the fast) and Suhoor (pre-dawn meal). Recognizing this reality, the presidential family has consistently supported Muslim communities with essential food items aimed at easing the burden and ensuring that households observe the Holy Month with dignity.
At the Bombali Fullah Mosque, community leaders and worshippers expressed appreciation for the timely intervention, describing it as both symbolic and practical support. Religious leaders highlighted that beyond the food items, the gesture represents national inclusiveness and reinforces the spirit of peaceful coexistence that characterizes Sierra Leone’s interfaith harmony.
The outreach is not limited to Bombali District. Similar donations have been extended to several other districts and towns across the country, including Magburaka in Tonkolili District, Kono District and Koidu Town, Kambia District, Port Loko District, Kenema District, Bo District, and Moyamba District. In each of these areas, Muslim communities have received food packages intended to support fasting families throughout Ramadan.
Local representatives in Koidu Town and Magburaka confirmed that the donations were warmly received, noting that the initiative continues to strengthen the relationship between national leadership and grassroots communities. In Kambia and Port Loko, beneficiaries described the support as timely, particularly amid ongoing economic challenges that have affected household incomes.
Observers say the Ramadan outreach reflects a broader approach by the President and First Lady to foster social cohesion beyond political affiliations or regional lines. By extending support to districts across the Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western regions, the initiative demonstrates a deliberate effort to ensure inclusivity and national reach.
In Kenema, Bo, and Moyamba, religious leaders commended the gesture as an example of leadership that acknowledges the spiritual significance of Ramadan while addressing the practical needs of citizens. They emphasized that acts of charity during Ramadan carry profound religious value, as Islam encourages believers to support the less privileged and strengthen community bonds.
The initiative also aligns with Sierra Leone’s long tradition of religious tolerance. Although the country is home to both Muslims and Christians in significant numbers, interfaith cooperation remains one of its defining characteristics. By supporting Muslim communities during Ramadan, the President and First Lady reinforce this culture of mutual respect and solidarity.
Community members across the various districts expressed hope that such humanitarian gestures would continue in the years ahead. Many described the annual Ramadan donation as a consistent tradition that has come to symbolize compassion, national unity, and leadership responsiveness to community needs.
