His Excellency Brigadier General (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, commissioned and officially opened the NASSIT District Office in Moyamba on Friday, 16 January 2026. The epoch-making event brought together Government Ministers, Parliamentarians, Paramount Chiefs, Heads of Parastatals, the media, and other dignitaries from across the country.
In his keynote address, President Bio praised NASSIT’s efforts, congratulated the people of Moyamba on this historic achievement, and described the opening of the NASSIT District Office as a critical step towards extending social security protection to the vast majority of Sierra Leoneans, noting, “The office reflects my Government’s determination to bring essential services closer to the people”.
While urging the people of Moyamba to make full use of the facility, President Bio said Social Security was about the welfare, security, respect, and dignity of people.
He also said NASSIT was working to establish a pension scheme for the informal sector that would create a platform to protect informal workers, including bike riders, farmers, carpenters, and petty traders.
The President mentioned that as a way of registering his commitment, he has creation of a Social Protection Regulatory Authority to regulate the Social Protection space.
He called on NASSIT to expedite the implementation of the new scheme, which he described as a game-changer in the fight against poverty.
In his statement, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swarray, said that President Bio’s determination to accelerate decentralisation and bring public services closer to communities culminated in the opening of the first NASSIT District Office in Moyamba. “This office will serve the people of Moyamba and its environs, and it is intended to make NASSIT services affordable, accessible, and convenient,” the Minister added. Honourable Swarray further informed the gathering that NASSIT was preparing to commission the ultra-modern Northwest Regional Office in Port Loko.
The Minister used the occasion to announce an increase in the national minimum wage, stating that from April 1, 2026, it would rise from Eight Hundred Leones to One Thousand and Two Hundred Leones.
He concluded on a note of appreciation to His Excellency, the President, for creating the enabling environment for growth and for the political will that was driving development, adding that no Minister would do well without the political will and support of the Presidency.
The NASSIT Director General, Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of some illustrious sons and daughters of Moyamba District and expressed appreciation for their notable and selfless service to the district.
He revealed that the decision to construct a District Office in Moyamba fulfilled a Presidential mandate, supported by extensive research, policy deliberations, and community consultations.
He added that the assessment highlighted the District’s significant economic viability and considerable potential, as well as the challenges NASSIT had faced over the years in enforcing compliance and the challenges members had encountered in accessing Social Security services.
The Director General paid a special tribute to His Excellency, the President, for his leadership, trust, and the opportunity to serve, and to the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security for his commitment, determination, and supervision, adding that the Moyamba project demonstrated how political will, community engagement, and effective planning could reduce historical gaps and improve service delivery.
Highlighting the impact of the new office, the NASSIT Director General explained that the Moyamba Office would not only increase NASSIT’s visibility and enforce compliance but also provide employees, employers, and pensioners in Moyamba and its environs with easier access to NASSIT services, including registration, benefit processing, and other engagements.
He emphasised that decentralisation is not merely the physical presence of an office; it is about building trust and confidence and bringing services closer to communities.
He assured residents that NASSIT was committed to expanding its nationwide footprint to ensure that social security services were efficient, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all Sierra Leoneans. He also urged residents, local authorities, and other stakeholders to leverage the office’s presence to strengthen their ties with NASSIT and to take full ownership of the building.
The programme was chaired by the Resident Minister, South, Chief John Abu, while the Paramount Chief of Kaiyamba Chiefdom, Foday Momodu Gulama, delivered the welcome address and poured libation.
The occasion concluded with a guided tour of the new building led by President Bio and his entourage.
