In an inspiring move to ignite interest and passion for aviation among young people, Musayaroh Barrie, the dynamic Director General of Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority and a forward-thinking advocate for youth empowerment, recently led a group of children on an educational visit to the Freetown International Airport. The visit, held in partnership with other players of Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), was centered on the belief that the future of aviation begins with children. The initiative aimed to expose participants to the fascinating world of air travel and aviation management, encouraging them to dream big and pursue careers within the sector.
The visit began with a warm welcome from airport officials and staff members, who guided the children through a step-by-step experience of the aviation process. From the check-in counters and security checkpoints to the departure lounges and boarding gates, the young visitors gained firsthand knowledge of airport operations. They were particularly thrilled to observe ground handling services and air traffic coordination, witnessing how teamwork and precision keep flights safe and efficient. This hands-on exposure helped demystify the complexities of air travel, transforming the airport from a distant place of wonder into an accessible environment of learning and opportunity.
As part of the interactive tour, the children also visited the airport’s firefighting and rescue department, where they observed a live demonstration by the airport’s emergency response team. The excitement was palpable as the participants learned how aviation firefighters use specialized equipment to ensure passenger safety during emergencies. This experience not only deepened their understanding of aviation safety but also underscored the courage and discipline required in such vital roles. For many of the children, this encounter planted a seed of admiration for the professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain global air safety standards.
Speaking during the visit, Musayaroh Barrie expressed her appreciation to the SLCAA team for their support and commitment to promoting youth engagement in the aviation industry. She emphasized that early exposure to technical fields like aviation can inspire children to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. According to her, nurturing curiosity from a young age is key to developing the next generation of pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, and aviation administrators who will drive Sierra Leone’s progress in the global air transport industry.
Officials from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority also reiterated their belief that the foundation of a strong aviation future lies in education and mentorship. They pledged to continue supporting initiatives that empower young learners with knowledge and experience. The event concluded with words of encouragement to the children, reminding them that the sky is not the limit but merely the beginning. Through initiatives like this, SLCAA, under the leadership of Musayeroh Barrie, is not only nurturing curiosity but also building a pipeline of future aviation professionals who will one day shape the skies of Sierra Leone and beyond.
